The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ms. Sabina Aliyeva took part in the Congress on "Violence and Media" organized on the initiative of TURAZ Scientific Union. The Congress brought together representatives from many international and local organizations, where medical and legal aspects of violence against women and children, as well as forms of media violence were discussed.
Delivering a speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Congress, the Ombudsman first spoke about the role of the media in society as a democratic platform, openness, and a reliable platform for free and different thinking. The Ombudsman stressed the need to show special sensitivity when disseminating materials describing and reflecting violence in the media. S.Aliyeva noted that the serious negative effects of such cases on children's psychology, which are widespread in the media and social media in modern times, should be taken into account.
The Ombudsman also stressed that the rights to personal immunity, honor, and dignity must be taken into account when providing information on victims of domestic violence, as well as violence against women and children. During the speech, it was noted that the Ombudsman's Office also held various events, training, and seminars to improve the professional training of journalists and increase their legal knowledge.
In the end, the Ombudsman wished success in the work of the Congress also underlining the necessity of increasing new initiatives and proposals in this field.
