The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan Ms. Sabina Aliyeva received the Director of the Office of the Directorate General of Programmes at the Council of Europe (CoE) Ms. Verena Taylor. The CoE official was accompanied by the Head of the CoE Office in Baku, Mr. Zoltan Hernyes.
During the meeting, the sides discussed a number of issues of common interest. The guest was given detailed information about the reforms implemented for the protection of human rights, the multifacet activity of the Institution in the field of human rights protection, mandate and competencies by the Ombudsman.
The dialogue between the sides also covered the issues related to gender equality, protection of women’s rights, and combating domestic violence (DV), and the importance of awareness-raising activities in the concerned area was stressed. It was also added that staff members of the Ombudsman Office take part in online training on the relevant topic on a regular basis in the frame of the Partnership for Good Governance II (PGGII) project organized by the EU/CoE.
Ms. Aliyeva stressed the importance of material, moral and psychological assistance to victims of DV, studying and applying the international experience on how to fight against DV and cooperation in preparing the educational tools on the topic in question.
In the end, the sides had further discussions about the extension of the bilateral cooperation between two institutions.
