The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ms. Sabina Aliyeva held an online meeting with the Head of the General Inspection Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Hassan Darvishian.
In the meeting, it was said that the cooperation between two countries in the field of economy, culture, and other areas of public life has developed.
During the meeting, the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, drawing attention to the human losses caused by landmines planted by Armenia in the territory of Azerbaijan during the period of occupation, also stressed that serious problems have emerged in IDP return. Since the cessation of hostilities until today, over 140 persons became victims of mine blasts, as a result of which 27 civilians were killed. The Ombudsman added that she submitted appeals to various international organizations regarding this issue, however, Armenia still refuses to provide minefield maps.
Reiterating severe violations of the principles of international humanitarian law by Armenia, the Ombudsman said that Armenian political and military leadership are directly responsible for these crimes against humanity. It was said that dwellings in the areas kept under the occupation by Armenia for almost 30 years have been totally devastated. This situation put at the risk not only peace and security but also negatively impacted regional development. Therefore, the Ombudsman stressed the importance of precise legal assessment of the existing situation in joint actions by all international human rights organizations and holding liable of all responsible persons for such matters not to be repeated.
In the meeting, Mr. Hassan Darvishian suggested signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the institutions, which was also welcomed by the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan. The event was continued with the discussion of the issues of the development of mutual cooperation and strengthening the relations among all members of the OIC Ombudsmen Association.
