Ombudsman received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to the Republic of Azerbaijan

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ms. Sabina Aliyeva received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Wolfgang Manig.

Greeting the guest, the Ombudsman gave detailed information to him about the extensive activity directions of the Institution. Ms. Aliyeva brought to the attention of the guest the fact that institution takes continuous and expedient measures for protection, promotion and restoration of human rights and freedoms following the Constitution, national legislation and the international treaties to which Azerbaijan is a party. Furthermore, the Ombudsman noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, she sent appeals concerning ensuring and social protection of the rights of vulnerable groups of the population, especially the persons with disabilities to various government bodies. The Ombudsman underlined that within her term of office she has given special importance to further expansion of the cooperation with civil society institutions.

It was also noted that fact-finding missions were conducted in the areas destroyed as a result of missile rockets targeting civilian objects in Azerbaijan by Armenian armed forces during 44 day-long war, covering the period from September 27 to November 09, 2020, and that special reports, prepared based on the collected pieces of evidence and facts were sent to relevant international organizations. Noting that 7 special reports on human rights violations during the war were prepared so far, Ms. Aliyeva also said that she met with the servicemen, captured during the hostilities and our compatriots, held hostage by Armenia since 2014, to investigate cases of torture and ill-treatment, as a result of which the 8th report was prepared based on the collected information and sent to relevant international bodies.

In his turn, the Ambassador W. Manig thanked the Ombudsman for the warm reception and detailed information on the activities of the institution. The Ambassador, expressing his interest in collaboration for effective protection of human rights and promotion of the rule of law, also highly appreciated the cooperation of the Ombudsman with civil society institutions and expressed his support.

The parties also discussed several other issues in the meeting.
