The Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman held online events entitled "The role of the Ombudsman in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs)" in coordination with the Ganja branch of the Disabled Women's Society, as well as "Legal aspects of combating domestic violence" jointly with the Heydar Aliyev Centers in that region. The representative of the Regional Center gave detailed information about the activity towards the protection of the disabled as specified in international human rights instruments, including the CRPD.
In his speech, it was noted that the Ombudsman addressed various stakeholders with a message concerning the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities during the COVID-19 outbreak and the implementation of social protection measures.
The participants were also informed in detail about the application procedures to the Ombudsman. The PWDs’ questions were answered.
During the online events, it was broadly discussed the various proposals on the prevention of Domestic Violence, as well as different documents, including the "National Action Plan to Combat Domestic Violence in Azerbaijan for 2020-2023", the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence, and others on combating domestic violence and various aspects of gender equality, including the Action Plan for 2020-2025 on the prevention of sex-selective abortion.
Besides, it was noted that the Ombudsman institution made efforts to raise awareness of the population in this area, which positively facilitated the social development and legal culture, and increasing the efficiency of government agencies.
During the events, the participants made a number of proposals to combat domestic violence.
