The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, had a meeting with Aslan Abashidze, a member of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
At the meeting, the guest was informed by the Ombudsman about the mandate and activities for the protection of human rights and freedoms. Underscoring the importance of international cooperation in the activity of the Office, the Ombudsman highlighted strong relationships with ombuds and national human rights institutions (NHRIs) of other countries, international organizations, including the UN and its specialized institutions.
The serious violations of international legal norms during the three-decade Armenian occupation of our territories, were pointed out. Also, the Ombudsman-initiated fact-finding missions implemented in our liberated territories, as well as reports, statements, and appeals, which were prepared and submitted to national and international institutions, foreign ombudspersons, and NHRIs, were brought to the attention of the UN official.
Furthermore, it was said that this year, our country will host COP 29 – the 29th session of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, and that, the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan will plan events in this direction. The possible cooperation perspectives were also discussed.
Professor Aslan Abashidze thanked the Ombudsman for the warm reception in his turn.
Meanwhile, the sides discussed several issues of common interest.
