The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva participated in the event dedicated to the International Migrants Day. The joint event organized by the Ombudsman Office, the State Migration Service and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) was attended by representatives of various government agencies and international organizations working on migration.
During her speech, Sabina Aliyeva said that the Ombudsman Office focuses on the effective protection of the rights of vulnerable groups, including migrants and takes regular measures to protect the rights of refugees, foreigners, stateless persons and asylum seekers, and to develop the asylum system and other areas.
In her speech, the Ombudsman also stressed that during the COVID-19 pandemic the main problem was the regulation of the legal status of migrants living with uncertainty.
S. Aliyeva spoke also about the extensive cooperation of the Ombudsman Institution with the State Migration Service, foreign ombudspersons, as well as diplomatic missions.
Furthermore, it was noted that the Ombudsman Institution regularly carries out awareness-raising activities for target groups. The participants were briefed about the prompt work of the Ombudsman's Call Center No. 916 and its social network platforms, as well as regular visits conducted within the National Preventive Mechanism mandate to monitor the situation with migrants' rights.
During the speech, the Ombudsman put forward solution-based proposals on issues she deemed useful in this area.
