The next group of bachelor’s and master’s students of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Baku State University and Azerbaijan University of Languages has recently started their practical and scientific-research internships with the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Firstly, the Head of the Ombudsman Office, Aydin Safikhanli met with the students. He, initially spoke about the Khojaly tragedy, committed by Armenian nationalists against the Azerbaijani people as a result of ethnic cleansing policy and spoke about the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts as a result of Armenia’s aggression policy against Azerbaijan which resulted in violation of all fundamental rights of more than one million refugees and IDPs.
Speaking about comprehensive and fundamental reforms in all areas of our country, A.Safikhanl? pointed out that Azerbaijan is an equal member of the international organizations. He added that the Constitution of Azerbaijan, which was adopted in 1995 and improved as a result of the nationwide referendums, established a basis for the effective achievement of human rights in our country, then outlined the importance of the establishment of the Ombudsman Institution in the country and gave detailed information on the institution’s mandate and powers, activity directions, regional centers, as well as the international cooperation. Furthermore, he spoke about the Commissioner’s functions for the implementation of the activities as National Preventive Mechanism against Torture and monitoring functions on implementation of the Law on Access to Information.
Recalling the Order of the President Ilham Aliyev dated December 30, 2019, regarding declaring 2020 as the “Year of Volunteers” in the Republic of Azerbaijan, he added that the Ombudsman Office also joined this call and there are also persons volunteering at the office along with the bachelor's and master's students having internship.
During the meeting, numerous questions of participants were answered.
In general, until now nearly 400 undergraduate and graduate students have received relevant certificates of the Ombudsman Office.
