The Ombudsman Institute of the North Macedonia has launched international conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the institute in Skopje.
Members of NHRIs from Europe, Asia, Near East, and Arab countries took part in this event. The Azerbaijan Ombudsman Office was represented by Mr. Z. Valimammadli.
The conference focused on issues of influence of the environment to human rights, protection of the rights of persons from disadvantaged groups, and social and cultural rights and so on.
Under the agenda of the meeting, Mr. Valimammadli gave broad information about the work of the Azerbaijani Ombudsman in the field of human rights protection and promotion, mutual fruitful international cooperation with UN, CoE and other international organizations. Emphasizing that
20 percent of territories of Azerbaijan have been occupied by Armenian armed forces, he urged the importance of unconditional implementation of four UN Resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh and regretted about up to date failure of implementation of COE Parliamentary Assembly Resolutions and Recommendations, thereto.
He spoke about the grave atrocities of this conflict, which is still being continued by seriously damaging the environment in uncontrolled lands; so that people suffer from lack of drinking water about what the Azerbaijani Ombudsman submit the written statements to the Human Rights Council and relevant information to Special Rapporteurs of the UN reflecting anxiety about.
Emphasizing that current environmental issues are not local and that it is important to draw global attention on it, he said that “Metsamor” Nuclear Power Plant, which is absolutely useless, is a serious threat to the neighboring countries from the ecological perspective.
It was also noted that the Azerbaijani Commissioner addressed letter of anxiety about the concerned issue to the UN Human Rights Council.
