The Ombudsman Office of Azerbaijan, with the financial support of the UNHCR Country Office, organized an event dedicated to December 10th - International Human Rights Day.
When speaking at the event, the Ombudsman noted that this year marks the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the UDHR and highlighted that this document has led to a positive approach to the issue of the protection of human rights by the states.
The Ombudsman also said that, at present, the global community remains indifferent to the widespread violations of human rights, and that several colonial countries suffering in different parts of the world are still continuing their struggle for the restoration of their freedom and justice.
Noting that Azerbaijan is one of the countries suffering from double standards, Sabina Aliyeva emphasized that 20 percent of the territory of Azerbaijan was under occupation by Armenia for about 30 years, during which cities and villages, historical and cultural monuments were destroyed, many species of flora and fauna were annihilated, and lands were contaminated with landmines.
The Ombudsman noted that important measures have been taken this year in the field of human rights, particularly in the protection of the right to live in a healthy environment. It was noted that Azerbaijan hosted the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), and within this framework, the Ombudsman Office held the International Baku Forum of Ombudsmen, as well as an interactive discussion on the topic 'Climate Justice Based on Human Rights: The Role of NHRIs.”
Meanwhile, the winners of the journalist writing and children's drawing competitions on the topic 'Climate Change and Human Rights' announced by the Commissioner were awarded.
At the award ceremony, Ağaali Ibrahimov, Vice President of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan, a People's Artist, also participated as the chairman of the jury for the drawing competition.
