The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman), Sabina Aliyeva, addressed a correspondence to the Ombudsman of Montenegro, Siniša Bjeković, regarding the detention of several citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Podgorica, the capital city of Montenegro, within the past days.
In the correspondence, the Commissioner requested her Montenegrin colleague to take this issue under his control and ensure the rights of the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan currently held in custody are protected in line with Montenegro’s national legislation and international human rights obligations.
Sabina Aliyeva underlined the importance of ensuring the rights of detainees, such as presumption of innocence, legal assistance, and services of an interpreter.
The correspondence also reads about the necessity of preventing any discrimination, hate speech, or hostility on ethnic, national, or religious grounds based on the equality and non-discrimination principles enshrined in international documents.
