Sabina Aliyeva, the Human Rights Commissioner of Azerbaijan, participated in an international scientific conference held on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the ombuds institution in Serbia.
The event had brought together ombudsmen and representatives of national human rights institutions from foreign countries, leaders and delegates of international organizations, international experts, and scholars. At her speech, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman congratulated her Serbian colleague and the staff on the occasion of their anniversary and wished success in their future endeavors to protect human rights.
The Azerbaijani Ombudsman provided detailed information about the relevant activities, emphasizing the significant role of ombuds institutions as effective human rights mechanisms.
Speaking about the last amendments to the Constitutional Law on the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, the Ombudsman underlined her extended mandate to ensure equality and prevent discrimination and protect children’s and PWDs rights, etc. She also emphasized the purpose of these changes was to strengthen the Ombudsperson’s work and make it effective in protecting human rights and freedoms.
Underscoring the importance of maintaining effective and strong cooperation with international organizations, ombudspersons, and NHRIs, Sabina Aliyeva underlined the strong collaborative relations between the ombudspersons of Azerbaijan and Serbia. The Ombudsman expressed her satisfaction in recalling an MoU between these two institutions signed earlier this year during the International Symposium of Ombudspersons held in Baku.
