The Ombudsman Office held an event to commemorate the anniversary of the January 20 tragedy

The Ombudsman Office of Azerbaijan organized a commemorative event to mark the 36th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.

The event began with a one-minute moment of silence in memory of the martyrs who lost their lives during this tragedy.

In her opening remarks, Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva briefed about the January 20 event as one of the tragic, honorable, and catastrophic pages of our history, pointing out that during these incidents, fundamental human rights and the fundamentals of international law were openly violated.

According to Sabina Aliyeva, National Leader Heydar Aliyev initially evaluated the January 20 tragedy from a political and legal standpoint. Heydar Aliyev's statement in the permanent representative of Azerbaijan in Moscow brought this horrific crime to the attention of the international community.

The Ombudsman noted that at the time, international organizations and the global community did not give the necessary legal and political response to this grave crime, and she emphasized that this injustice later created a precedent for even graver crimes in our region.

The Ombudsman said that the memory of the January 20 martyrs will remain eternally in the memory of our nation.

During his remarks at the ceremony, Nazim Alakbarov, a witness to the tragedy, shared his memories, highlighting how that night left a lasting impression on our people.

Then, employees of the Ombudsman Office, Fazail Hasanov and Polad Jafarzade, spoke about the historical and political significance of this event, noting that the memory of the martyrs will always be honored.

At the event, a video dedicated to the January 20 tragedy was shown.

The event concluded with the delivery of the Ombudsman’s statement commemorating the 36th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.
