The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva participated in the event entitled "Challenges in achieving gender equality" held jointly with the National Coordinating Council for Sustainable Development in Penitentiary Service No. 4 on November 25 - the International Day against Violence against Women.
Along with Sabina Aliyeva, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva, senior officials from the Ministry of Justice, the Secretariat of the National Coordinating Council for Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Economy, the Mediation Council, the State Committee for Family, Women and Children and governmentagencies, representativesof scientific and educational institutions, lawyers, civil society institutions, law faculty students also media representatives attended the event.
The participants got acquainted with the activities and conditions of the newly created penitentiary institutions for female and juvenile convicts.
The ombudsman made an opening speech at the event and shared his views on the future integration and rehabilitation of women in the penitentiary institution after their release, and shared her views on the conditions created here.
Sabina Aliyeva also emphasized that the number of specialties in the vocational school operating within the institution has been increased, and the opportunities for women to acquire new professions in these institutions have been further expanded. The ombudsman noted that the convicted women earn income for themselves by working and they support their families. The Commissioner added that the Ombudsman Institution also supports them in this regard.
Within the framework of the event, female prisoners presented a concert program.
As a novelty, a free English language course for prisoners was opened in the institution. The "Women Lawyers" Alliance of the Bar Association held a free legal aid action for convicts, and the "Inner City" Museum Center held a master class on the art of "Kurama" and displayed an exhibition of the handiwork of female convicts.
