Ombudsman participated in the event held in penitentiary institutions on the International Day for Protection of Children

The Human Rights Commissioner of Azerbaijan Ms. Sabina Aliyeva participated in the event held in penitentiary institutions for juveniles and female prisoners by the Ministry of Justice Penitentiary Service on the occasion of 1 June –  International Day for Protection of Children.

Ms. Aliyeva greeted the participants on a remarkable day, noting that this event coincided with the "Human Rights Month" announced by the Ombudsman. It was also noted that the rights of every person held in penitentiaries are in focus. Speaking about the Pardon Decree recently signed by President Ilham Aliyev, the Ombudsman spoke about the long-standing policy of humanism of our state. According to the decree, many women prisoners were pardoned and reunited with their families. In addition, the Ombudsman highlighted that based on the Ombudsman’s motions, made from the very beginning of the Ombudsman institution, in total, 805 inmates, including juveniles, females, the elderly, people with disabilities, persons suffering from various diseases, and other convicts have been granted clemency.   

During her speech, the Ombudsman also said that instead of being in such places, they should attend education facilities. It was stated that the protection of children’s rights is in the focus of the President and the First Vice-President of the country. The Ombudsman highly appreciated the created favorable conditions meeting modern standards in both new detention facilities, constructed by the state for the rehabilitation and ensuring the inmates’ rights.

In the end, Ms. Aliyeva once again delivered her greeting messages to all convicts there and wished them to be united with their families as soon as possible.
