Ombudsman pays special attention to getting experience of young specialists in the field of human rights. Therefore, the Ombudsman Institution creates an opportunity for undergraduate and master students studying relevant specializations to have scientific and research internships with the Institution.
Currently, undergraduate and master level students of Baku State University (BSU), Azerbaijan University of Languages, and Western Kaspi University were involved in internships with the Ombudsman Institution upon their requests.
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, it was agreed upon a hybrid form of internships. In the first round, which was started in February of the current year, the last year law students of BSU and second-year master students specializing in Human Rights and Health Law had completed their internships.
During internships, the internees listened to lectures on the general activity of the Ombudsman Institution, including the provisions of the Constitutional law on the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, structural units of the Institution, and its Regional Centers. In addition, during classes held using Zoom, the administrative staff of the Institution gave broad information to the internees about the Ombudsman’s activities in protection of human rights, application review procedure, protecting the right to access to information, cooperation with international institutions and civil society organizations, and functions of national preventive mechanism against torture.
During in-person internships with the Institution, the internees got familiarized with the institution’s structural organization, including departments and units, specialized human rights library, and had an opportunity to benefit from scientific literature useful for their master theses.
At the end of the internships, the students were presented with recommendation letters by the Ombudsman and suggested to continue further cooperation in raising awareness of people, to improve legal culture and thinking in various forms.
