The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ms. Sabina Aliyeva attended an event held at the Baku State University devoted to the presentation of a comprehensive international report on the violated rights of Azerbaijani IDPs.
Speaking at the event, the Ombudsman said that the report was of special legal and political significance. The Ombudsman stressed that as a result of Armenia's long-term policy of occupation, terror, ethnic cleansing, and genocide against Azerbaijan, the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Azerbaijanis have been grossly violated. The Azerbaijani Ombudsman has noted with regret that the requirements set out in the documents adopted by international organizations on the fact of occupation for almost 30 years have remained only on paper.
It was also noted that during the 44-day war, the armed forces of Armenia have fired on Azerbaijani civilian objects using banned long-range weapons, in gross violation of the human rights and freedoms of our citizens.
The participants were informed about the Ombudsman's activities in the investigation of war crimes committed by Armenia, including cooperation with international organizations, fact-finding mission reports, statements, and appeals to the local and international community.
The Ombudsman said that these documents were referred to in subsequent reports on the war by international non-governmental organizations and experts in international law.
In conclusion, Ms. Aliyeva proposed to establish joint cooperation between the Ombudsman Office and Baku State University, as well as to establish a relevant working group to investigate the facts on this topic and document them in the form of reports.
