Ganja, Sheki, Jalilabad, and Guba regional centers of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan held events on March 31 – Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.
At the event organized by Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman jointly with the Tovuz Youth House Social Service Facility and the Youth and Sports Department of Barda district and with the participation of young people, the head of the Regional Center Sabuhi Abbasov noted that dashnak Armenian nationalists murdered peaceful Azerbaijanis with special cruelty on national and religious grounds, burned them alive, destroyed historical and cultural monuments and civilian objects in 1918. Young people who spoke at the event emphasized the importance of promoting this genocide among the youth of the country and at the international level.
Parviz Mammadov, the head of the Sheki Regional Center, spoke on the topic during a video conference organized by the Sheki Regional Center of the Ombudsman together with Sheki Central Library with the participation of students and schoolchildren, as well as during another event organized in Zagatala Integrated Training Boarding Gymnasium. He noted that the Armenian nationalists pursued a policy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and deportation against the Azerbaijanis, the most terrible example of which was the massacres of 1918. He said that the massacre that started in Baku province was carried out with special cruelty and continued in other regions of the country, hundreds of villages were destroyed.
Guba Regional Center of the Ombudsman together with Guba branch of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations held an event dedicated to March 31 with the participation of various government bodies and public figures. The head of Guba Regional Center Bahruz Afandiyev informed the participants about the statement of the Ombudsman addressed to international organizations in this regard. The staff members of the Regional Center also visited the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex.
Jalilabad Regional Center of the Ombudsman organized a video conference with the participation of representatives of Heydar Aliyev Centers of Astara, Yardimli, Zardab districts, as well as the Astara District Pedagogical College, the Youth and Sports Department, the Museum of History and Ethnography, the State Art Gallery, and the Centralized Library System, as well as Astara city secondary school No. 1 named after M.A. Sabir and Astara district Tengerud village secondary school named after Samad Vurgun, and others.
During the video conference, information was given on the history of the Genocide, it was also noted that this crime was given a political assessment in Azerbaijan on March 26, 1998, and the Azerbaijan Ombudsman Institute took regular measures to inform the world community about these terrible events.
Speaking at the event the participants also noted that the Armenians, who committed those crimes, created impediments for the understanding of the scope of the crime and of its correct political and legal assessment, through veiling their unjustified territorial claims.
During the events, the Ombudsman’s statement on March 31 - the Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis was brought to the attention of the participants.
