The regional centers of the Ombudsman held online commemorative events in honor of the Tragedy of January 20

Guba, Ganja, Sheki and Jalilabad regional centers of the Commissioner for Human (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan held online events dedicated to the 31st anniversary of Tragedy of January 20, 1990, with the participation of various agencies of the districts they cover.


At the event, the heads of regional centers informed the participants about the history of the bloody January night, when brutal slaughtering, injury and disappearance of many innocent and unarmed civilians, including the elderly, women and children in the capital, suburbs and district took place.


The Ombudsman's Guba Regional Center together with the Guba branch of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations held an online event with the participation of the representatives of religious communities of Guba, Khachmaz, Siyazan, Gusar and Shabran regions and the Committee's staff. At the event, the head of the Regional Center Bahruz Efendiyev gave detailed information about this ruthless crime committed against civilians, regardless of nationality, age or gender. He also spoke about the the state care for families of those killed in the tragedy and people with disabilities in connection with the events.
Ganja Regional Center of the Ombudsman also organized online events on the 31st anniversary of the tragedy. The center organized two different events titled “January Tragedy in the context of human rights” and "January 20 tragedy is one of the gravest crimes against humanity" with the participation of representatives of various bodies and the young people. The head of the Regional Center Sabuhi Abbasov noted that the military aggression of the former Soviet Union against the Azerbaijani people on January 20, 1990, will remain in the history one of the gravest crimes against humanity.


An online event titled "January 20 is a symbol of the struggle for freedom" was organized by the Ombudsman's Jalilabad Regional Center in cooperation with the Astara, Samukh, Zardab, Yardimli district Heydar Aliyev Centers and other bodies. During the event, the head of the Regional Center Ziya Ismayilov noted that the state care to the families of those killed in the January 20 tragedy and also to the people with disabilities has been set as a priority issue.


Sheki Regional Center together with Mingachevir Youth and Sports Department, as well as Youth House, held an online meeting on "Our martyrs are our source of pride" with the participation of employees of various stakeholders of Sheki and Mingachevir, as well as youth. It was noted that the norms of international law were grossly violated by committing a massacre against the Azerbaijani people, who fought for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. During the event, the head of the Regional Center Parviz Mammadov said that although the full political and legal assessment of the tragedy was made by the Azerbaijani Parliament after the return of National Leader Heydar Aliyev to the power in 1993, but unfortunately, this crime against humanity has not yet received an international legal assessment.
