Recently, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmira Suleymanova has addressed a letter to the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation regarding the issue of Azerbaijani journalists.

The appeal concerned the information disseminated through the mass media on tracking, persecution, exposure to pressure, as well as existence of life threats for the Azerbaijani journalist Fuad Abbasov who resides and works in Russia; in addition to that the dismissal of another Azerbaijani journalist Matin Yasharoghlu, the editor-in-chief of the Baku  branch of the “Sputnik” International News Agency, in February of this year while fulfilling his service duties, who especially faced obstacles for his publications regarding Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

E.Suleymanova asked the Russian Ombudsman to examine the above-mentioned facts, as well as to take appropriate measures for the protection of the named Azerbaijani journalists’ rights, freedoms and legal interests set out in the international conventions and legislation of the Russian Federation.
